Modern canopies are actually taken from prehistoric designs. Take a look at some old history books and examine their shelters. You will probably find that their early shelters resemble our modern day versions in several ways. We may use high tech fabrics today, but in the past they used such things as leather goods and grasses.
A canopy is a lot like a tent, except most canopies are just the roofs with four or more corner legs holding it up. You can buy sides for your canopy and then you can use it much like a tent, but usually not as sealed. Shapes and sizes vary but you can find the one you need for your purposes.
On the back walls of some peoples homes you will find a rolled up canopy attached above the windows and doors. These can be rolled out when the home owner wants to extend his shade or rain protection over a patio area. Hot dog vendors, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, weddings and Picnics are just some of the many uses for canopies.
W.C. Coleman was out one day selling typewriters when he came to a store that had a gas lantern burning. This was new to Mr. Coleman, as he was use to seeing the more yellow, smokey light of a kerosine lantern. Mr. Coleman proceeded to develop his version of the gas lantern for the masses and his company has prospered every since. Sleeping bags, food coolers, tents, and canopies are just a few of the many products that Coleman now produces.
Three minutes is all it takes now to set up the modern canopy. These mechanical marvels can now be folded into a bag where you can easily carry them from event to event. The material used for the fabric is so much better than the grass and leathers of old.
If you want to get your canopy out of the bag and up in a hurry, you need 3 helpers to make it fast. One person can easily do it, but it takes a little longer. Pull the canopy out of the bag and set the feet end on the ground. Each person grabs a corner and pulls out on it. As they do the canopy gets larger and larger as the sides extend. Now just pull up on the sides so that you can set the buttons in place on the corner legs and viola! You have a finished product.
Before you attend your next tailgate party at your local stadium, get yourself a new canopy emblazoned with the logos and color of your favorite football team. The NFL now licenses the Colman Company to allow you to purchase a canopy with your favorite team’s colors and name. You can get this in a 10′ x 10′ canopy and add side curtains of the same colors if you wish.
