You must not underestimate the importance of having the right survival knife. Choose the proper survival knife. Your choice could mean the difference between living and dying. No one has to let you know that your knife is the best companion you can have in the great outdoors. A great survival knife is a great friend.

Your survival knife can not let you down, ever. The survival knife has to ready to use at all times. There was an era when all real men had a knife with them, even if was just a common pocket knife. If a man went to the challenges of nature, he made sure he had a hunting knife with him. A good quality, durable survival knife may well help to make the difference in a survival predicament.

The reality of today is that most men and women do not realize the advantages of having a handy knife at their side. In fact many men and women are afraid of knives. Go out on the hiking trail and you will meet people who will ask what the knife hanging on your pack is for.

If people have to ask what the knife is for, they they do not know why they should have one too. Many think of Hollywood movies like Rambo when they think of survival knives. They think that Hollywood heroes can conquer the world with their survival knife. But these huge knives depicted in the movies, are not always the best for the job.

Large knives can be difficult to control and can be too heavy for effective use. If you are familiar with the challenges of the great outdoors, you know that you need sometimes, a knife for fine detail work. The large and bulky knife is not right for this type of work as you know. But small knives do not make for exciting movies.

Look for a high quality knife sheath. The sheath is what you carry the knife in when you are not using it. The sheath should be made of high quality material like leather.

Many people do not take into consideration the sheath when making a buying decision, but the wrong sheath can actually cause you injury. There are many cheaply made sheaths on the market, made of vinyl with poor stitching or weak riveting. If the sheath is of poor vinyl material, the knife blade will but through the sheath and will be exposed; if you fall or stumble on the sheath you wear on your hip, the knife could stab you.

The survival knife should have a solid handle. There are knives available that have a hollow handle. The reason for the hollow area is to use it to carry survival items like fishing tackle. Some knives actually come with a hollow handle with fishing hooks, matches, and other survival kit items in it.

It is better to have a separate kit for your survival gear like fishing tackle. If you have a knife with a hollow handle and you lose the knife, you will lose your survival kit with it. Buy the right knife for you.

Learn more about the importance of a quality survival knife at Survival Camping World, the leading internet outfitter of survival gear.

In case you are an enthusiastic turkey hunter then you will always be on the lookout for customized barrels for turkey shooters. The best option when it comes to a turkey shoot barrel is to go for a made-to-order product.

In case you are an enthusiastic turkey hunter then you will always be searching for customized barrels for turkey shooters. The best option when it comes to a turkey shoot barrel is to choose a made-to-order product.

Therefore, the barrel is fashioned to suit the customer’s specifications, and the choke sleeve is also built to meet his demand. Any kind of gun can be purpose-made inclusive of the pump shot gun, the automatic shot gun or the predominantly used 12 gauge-single shot gun. This way a proper gun can be purchased either for turkey shooting or for shooting at any aimed object.

An expert turkey-shooter will be able to assist you to the best possible extent in choosing your barrel. You can also approach a gun-maker who is well-known for making award-winning guns. Such a person can have a good understanding of the requirements of the person who is eagerly looking out for a turkey shooting barrel to be used either in a competitive event or a hunting venture.

Shooters who have gained experience through the years in the hunting field and in target-shooting can fulfill the requirements of the amateur, and also the skilled person. Seeking their advice is of great advantage because they can keenly observe the needs and lead you to the right weapon. Consult them once, to get an assurance that they can meet your expectations. The expertise of the professional becomes more trustworthy if his services are recommended by several others.

A swift growth in technology over time has enabled the production of accurately designed guns even for the fundamental shots involving only a still-board. Thus, shot guns of all types are made with highly accurate designs. A person’s naturally inherited skill in target-shooting is helped to a great measure, with the production of such properly designed guns. As far as the ability of the shooter is concerned, the gun quality seems to be the decisive factor. Therefore, it is very important to catch up with the technological growth.

Your shotgun must be able to deliver consistently on the highest level of performance to improve your game. An excellent manufacturer is usually known for investing in high precision gadgets and equipment to create the customized shotguns for their clients.

You will get the barrel designed with smooth bores of any length required. They are generally crafted with diameters of 1 inch, 1 1/8 inch and 1 inch. Another specialty is the 1 inch smooth bore crafted out of stainless steel, which is the top end of customized turkey shotgun barrels.

In a normal hunting or shooting venture, a target placed as far as fifty yards needs a # 4 shot, whereas a distance of twenty to forty yards calls for a # 2 shot only. If you can afford to pay a little bit more, your purpose-made gun can be laser-machined and cryo-treated. This increases the performance level to a good extent.

It should be noted, that a professional gun-maker must be efficient enough to deliver you a suitable gun, keeping in mind the shooting house and the various shell-types. Depending on your choice, and based on your needs, an efficient gun-maker must provide you the gun, be it for target-shooting or turkey-shooting.

turkey shoot barrels are a subject of interest to all hunters.

Think back across the last 10 years and about disasters that caused disruption of the fragile food supply chain that brings everything to the supermarkets. What if you were in the Gulf Coast area when Hurricane Katrina hit? How about within a few hundred miles of Mount Saint Helens and the ash fall area? Now ask yourself if you are a place that could be affected by a natural disaster like an earthquake, hurricane, flooding or anything else that can disrupt the food supply chain.

Do you have loved ones in your family that depend on you to provide for them? How would you feel if you can not take care of your family and children? Visualize what it would be like day after day looking at your hungry and thirsty children and not being able to do anything about it. The time to stop something like that from taking place is now.

Here are three tips to help you get started on putting together a plan.

Make sure you have a safe location that everyone knows to go to. For most people this will be their home, but it also could be a house up in the woods, or a relative’s house. It is a good idea to have a location that is easy to get to and won’t have lots of people that will try to take your stores.

Have a source of water, a way to keep it, and a way to get fresh water. A good way to do this is to have a well dug on your property. Another is to find a river or pond close by and ensure you have water filtration equipment on hand.

Have a reserve of food available. You can begin by getting some cases of canned soup and meat locally, but to do this well you should calculate the amount of calories that you would need based on the quantity of people that are dependent on you and how long you think food will be needed. Moreover, make sure that food does not spoil by rotating it regularly or buying food prepared for long-term storage.

The time to get ready for an emergency so you can plan for the survival of your family is before the disaster hits. Make a plan and take action now.

72 hour survival kits could make the difference between life and death of you and your family in an emergency. There are many types of disasters and emergencies: fires, hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, and tornadoes. The government action plan for a major disaster is three to seven days to begin providing workers to the area. 72 hours is three days – it would be a good idea to consider a survival kit that you could live on for five to seven days.

Instead of dismissing this kind of planning immediately; remember the type of emergencies that occurred in the last 15 years. Think about what one of these would be like if you had nothing with you but what you were wearing. Even worse, think about the elderly or children that are in your care and how they would cope. To ease your mind, start preparing your survival bags immediately.

Before you start packing or buying anything, consider what the most probable situation is based upon where you are. This will lead to what you plan to do in the case of an emergency. For example, if your house is near the coast and the most likely problem is a hurricane, then your plan should include packing your vehicle with what you need and driving to safety. If you live in a city then you probably will be walking to safety either because you have no vehicle or the streets will be so jammed that walking is the only option. If you live in a relatively safe area inland, then you will probably be safe in your house.

Even though you should get ready for the most likely event, you should also have a backup plan. There may come a time in your life when you have to get out of town as fast as possible, and you will be unsure as to what help and support you will get while on the way. That is when you need to have one of these kits ready to go.

Make 72 hour survival kits for every person in your family. Start by getting a rucksack that is a size and capacity that the person can carry all day. You do not have to buy the backpack to start putting together the items of the kit, however. Choose two complete sets of rugged clothes that you no longer wear, but would do well in a disaster. Then plan on what you are going to need for food, water, and shelter, and get it. Pack light so you can carry it all.

Start planning right away, and be ready for when disaster strikes.

Create your emergency preparedness checklist for you and your family. See how to do it at 72 hour survival kits.

A Bowie knife is a specific thing, even though the term is loosely applied to most any large hunting knife. A Bowie knife has distinguishing features that make it very specialized in certain ways and very versatile in others. The principal difference between a Bowie and most hunting knives is that a Bowie was designed to be a dual-purpose device in a specific regard: It was designed both for utility and as an implement of self-defense. The design carries the name of its original carrier, Jim Bowie, a legendary frontiersman and one of the fighters at the Alamo.

A Bowie knife always has a single edge. Sometimes, the false edge at the end of the blade is sharpened, but this is not traditional. This single edge makes the knife more practical for myriad activities, including skinning, cleaning game and chopping. The powerful blade is what makes chopping possible and is another defining characteristic. In a pinch, these blades could serve as tools that could be used for many different survival needs.

Bowie knives without the characteristic hand guards do not deserve the name. The hand guard is angled down on the bottom and up on the top. In romantic assessments, this was used by the wielder to trap the blade of another fighter. In reality, this is a popular guard design on many fighting knives as it easily deflects, not traps, the blade of an opponent. This design is also seen on some swords. The downward-pointing lower hand guard ensures that blades are safely deflected away from the user’s hand, which is a primary target in any fight with bladed weapons.

The Bowie knife always has a single edge. This is where it really blends a tool with a weapon. For obvious reasons, double-edges are preferred on many fighting knives. The single edge on a Bowie makes it more practical for the user and lends strength to the blade. The blade is also very thick and wide. In a camping situation, this makes it ideal for chopping and hacking.

Bowie knives are useful tools but, in many jurisdictions, they are illegal to carry. These knives, after all, are weapons and are designed to be lethal. Before heading out of the house with one’s Bowie strapped to one’s leg, check local laws to make sure carrying such a fearsome knife is legal.

Dave is the owner of an online bowie knife and glock grip extension store.

Which size is right for your needs? What makes one blade size better than another? Actually, you will find that each size blade is ideal for some rather specific things.

You will find that bowie knives come in blade sizes ranging from a compact six inches all the way up to a full two feet. This tremendous range of sizes is testament to the wide range of uses this blade design can be put to without damaging the knife. However, what size is right for you? In order to answer this question successfully, you will need to know more about your intended uses. While bowie knives are well known for their versatile nature, different blade lengths are more suited to different tasks. How do you determine what’s right?

First, consider the shorter blades. These are generally between six and eight inches in length. These are ideal for any number of tasks. You’ll find that the shorter blades offer benefits if you need to clean and gut a fish, as well as if you need to skin a deer, moose or elk. Because the blades are shorter, you have greater control over the blade’s direction and movement. You will not find this control with larger blades, so you should certainly opt for a smaller blade if you anticipate performing these types of tasks.

Twelve to Fourteen Inches – These are enormous blades. You’ll find that a bowie knife with a blade in this size range is truly formidable. Whether used for clearing brush or for personal protection, these knives are more than handy. However, you will find that jobs requiring precision cutting are not so easily accomplished and that you might need to carry more than one knife with you for the different tasks that you will encounter. However, bowie knife blades in this size range are quite sturdy and provide tremendous resilience for hard use.

Blades larger than about twelve inches are a bit more unwieldy than smaller blades are. However, they are ideal for heavy chopping and can even be used to clear brush in a pinch. However, because of their immense size, carrying these blades can be a bit difficult though you will find that they are more than eye-catching when worn.

Before you purchase that bowie knife, you might have a few questions that you want answered. One of the most frequently asked questions about these knives is whether or not you need a permit to own one. Do you have to have a permit if you keep your bowie knife at home? Do you need a permit if you will use it on a hunting trip? These questions are vital, but the answers might be far from enlightening.

Bowie knives are rather special cases in many states. You’ll find that quite a few southern states still have laws on the books that cite these as “illegal” weapons. That means that you cannot carry them openly or concealed outside of your home. However, many other states do allow you to carry these knives without a permit. No states require that you have a permit to carry one on your person in an unconcealed capacity, though (in those states where these knives can be carried in public).

In most states, you do not need a license to carry a knife, unless you plan to carry it concealed on your body. For instance, the state of Arizona allows you to conceal your bowie knife on your person in public, so long as you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. That said, some states take a very dim view of bowie knives and other large knives. Take Washington DC for example: you cannot carry any knife over 3 inches long, whether concealed or in the open. Therefore, you need to check with your state’s laws before you take your knife out in public.

The question of taking your bowie knife on a hunting, camping or fishing trip is quite different from “carrying it in public”. As these knives are designed for outdoors use, most states do not prohibit you from using them or carrying them without a permit if you will be engaged in an activity for which the knife was designed (a legal activity, of course).

By informing yourself ahead of time regarding your rights involving bowie knives, you can stay on the good side of the law and enjoy the use of these tools. You should also ensure that you follow any laws governing the carrying of bowie knives in your vehicle, as well.

Can you tell the difference between a hunting knife and a bowie knife? If you were to look at a bowie knife side by side with another type of hunting knife, several differences would be obvious. What are these differences? Isn’t a bowie knife still a hunting knife? While the original bowie was often used as a hunting knife, it was designed for many other purposes, as well. How do bowies differ from standard hunting knives?

First, standard hunting knives tend to be designed for a single use. Take the skinning knife for example. These have long, slim, razor-sharp blades. They are powerful tools when used for their intended purpose (skinning animals). However, how do you think that blade would hold up if you tried to chop with it? What if you encountered a bone or tough sinews? Would the skinning knife be able to handle the increased pressure and abuse? Chances are the knife would not be suited for any purpose other than skinning.

Bowie knives also come in a wide range of different sizes. You will find these run the gamut from a modest six inches to a massive foot and a half. You obviously will not want to use an 18-inch blade to gut a fish. However, that blade would work quite well in clearing brush, for protection and for general-purpose use. Bowie knives have an immense number of uses and their size will certainly play a role in the uses to which they are put. One of the reasons that hunting knives are so limited in the scope of their uses is their blade design. If you look at a gut hook knife, it’s hard to imagine using it for any other purpose.

As you can see, a bowie knife is very different from a standard hunting knife. However, they are often classified as hunting knives and are sold in sporting goods under that label. This doesn’t mean that they are for use in hunting alone, though. In addition, you will find that a bowie knife will put you in good stead for a variety of situations, whether you need to do some work around your home, or just want protection in your car.

Choosing to purchase a bowie knife over a hunting knife is an excellent decision. This will ensure that you are able to use your knife in almost any situation and that you will not suffer the limitations brought on by a single-use type of knife.

If you have just purchased your first bowie knife, or even if you have been an avid collector of these blades for a number of years, it can be difficult to determine exactly what all the different parts of the blade are supposed to be used for. Part of this confusion stems from the myriad different styles of blade out there. For instance, you’ll find modern bowies that have saw-tooth edging on the spine, while historically accurate models do not include this feature. What are the different parts supposed to do?

Blood Groove – A deep (relatively) groove that runs from near the back end of the blade to near the point, the blood groove serves a very specific purpose. This groove is used to allow blood to flow out from a stab, ensuring that the blade does not become trapped by suction. However, not all bowie knife models feature this groove, as it is a recent, modern development.

Saw Teeth – You will undoubtedly encounter other bowie knives that feature a saw-toothed design on the spine of the blade. Ostensibly, this is used for sawing wood, or scaling fish. However, most users find that it actually gets in the way and can even injure the knife’s wielder if they are unwary. If you choose to purchase a knife with this feature, be very aware that the saw-tooth portion might not be as handy as you first think.

Spanish Notch – The Spanish Notch is another sometime inclusion. You’ll find that this notch offers little in the way of enhanced usability, but it does provide you with a handy point to start sharpening the blade. The notch sits at the back edge of the blade, just before the ricasso. This might have originally been used to help skin branches, or have been used to work with nautical rigging or other rope forms, but today it has few uses and is rarely found except on historically accurate bowie knives.

Guard – The guard, or quillions, of the blade serve several purposes, as well. You’ll find that traditional blades have angled guards, with the upper guard angled forward toward the point and the lower guard angled back, toward the butt. These provide protection for the hand, as well as allowing the wielder to trap an opponent’s blade (the upper guard only). The guard also serves to keep your hand from running off the handle and onto the blade when stabbing with the knife.
