The Safety First Approach To Guns

Guns sure do look exciting in the movies, do they not? They look cool, and the shootouts are always thrilling, and the bad guys look real mean holding them out there all sideways and menacing. But have you seen what one can do in real life?

In the real world the one thing that guns do is kill living creatures dead. That is why policemen carry them, so they can kill bad guys. That is why soldiers have them, in order to kill enemies. That is why hunters use them, so they can kill animals that are bigger than they are for meat.

So if you are in the market for a weapon of your own, the first thing you must understand is that it is designed to kill. They can kill on purpose or by accident, and the mess they will create in doing so is gruesome to say the least. Any one who has been on a hunting trip knows this. So you need to know how to keep things safe when using a weapon.

You must begin and end with safety in all things concerned with your firearm. This will be clearly stressed from the moment you began shopping for one. Licensed and qualified arms dealers will strongly advise you to take a safety course, and in some areas it will be required. Do not even hesitate to do so; your life may depend upon it.

Before you take you new weapon home, you must know how and where to properly store it. Under your pillow is not an option, nor is in a dresser drawer. Thieves and children find unsecured firearms and disastrous results ensue. People accidentally get killed. Store your gun in a safe and use a trigger lock, always.

Once you hide it properly, do not forget it and then think it is going to help you out when you pull it out. Old weapons and old ammunition do not work very well sometimes. Neither do out of practice shooters. Use the piece on occasion, in order to keep both of you in practice and in decent shape in case of necessity.

If you ever get into a situation where you truly need to use your weapon, you will be very glad that you took the care that you did. Guns are powerful tools to keep at hand, but like all powerful tools they need tremendous care. So show you care by always practicing safety first in all things you do with them.

A History Of Guns Through The Ages

Guns developed through a series of logical steps, but are relatively new forms of protection considering that our early ancestors had to make do with sticks, stones and then later with spears and swords. The Chinese can be thanked for the discovery of gunpowder, but it was the Europeans who saw its potential as a weapon for war.

Fast forward to the sixteenth century and the invention of the matchlock gun. A burning fuse was lit to ignite the gunpowder poured into the flash pan of a gun. This resulted in the ignition of the powder in the gun barrel, which forced the lead shot down the barrel and towards its potential target.

Unfortunately this was a rather dangerous system, what with the volatile nature of gunpowder, but it led to the development of the wheel lock mechanism, which was much safer. A spring loaded wheel with a series of serrations along the edge was held in place until its release caused sparks, which in turn ignited the powder stored in the barrel.

The next step in the evolution of the gun was the flintlock. The name originated from the lock that was placed over the powder to prevent accidental ignition. A hammer designed for operation with the thumb was drawn back and released to hit the flint against the block. A single shot was released by this action and over time, for expediency, a double barrel version came into being.

Always looking for improvements in efficiency, a revolver was first registered at the patent office by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson in 1854. A revolving cartridge could hold up to six bullets for firing in quick succession. The design was an instant success and was adopted by the lawmen of their day and is still popular today.

The next design evolution was the semi-automatic gun, which used the energy of the firing mechanism to rotate the cylinder, lining up the next bullet in the barrel. Most guns used the recoil energy to implement this movement, but other designs, like the Desert Eagle hand gun, employ a gas powered action to do this.

The most recent development in gun technology is the fully automatic handgun. The Mauser C96 and pistols like the Glock 18 are lightweight handguns that allow for rapid fire or can be used as traditional single shot weapons. Still the personal weapon of choice for any person engaged in hand to hand combat it is also used universally as a means of self-protection.

Why Are We So Worried About Guns?

Many people question why some countries and states don’t have police officer that carry guns. The reason tends to be that through consideration and debate that countries government decided that the use of such weapons either as a deterrent or a preventative measure just won’t work for them.

You may think that police officers carry firearms so that people will think twice but if that really was the case then gun crime would be massively lower in those countries but this sadly isn’t the case. Those countries usually have relaxed weapons laws as well meaning most civilians can apply for a license to have a fire arm and this in itself can cause problems.

Those with small children might feel that they want to shield their child or children from firearms but the sad thing is that they are a part of our day to day lives. They may not be apparent on the street you live on but they will be seen in many forms on the TV or in the news where many places at war are depicted along with their use of weaponry. Kids will often still play cops and robbers despite never being bought a toy gun.

People worry so much but how can we combat this fear and the problems associated with firearms? Some think that only letting those who professionally have a legitimate use for a weapon should be able to apply, own and use one.But others may think this strangles their right to be able to protect themselves and their property.

The down side to weapons like these is that they can some times end up in the hands of people who will misuse them or use them for criminal activities, the owner may have not secured it or they may have sold the weapon in order to pay off debts. It could even have been stolen but the intent by the criminal is still there.

Many people assume those regular people with a fire arm won’t look after it but very often they know how to store the gun so only they know where it is and how to access it. Especially if the weapons owner has small children around they will always be careful and hide it away, keeping ammunition separate.

There is a lot of fear surrounding these types of deadly weapons and sometimes it is justifiable. However people have to remember that it isn’t essentially the firearm that kills someone or robs a bank, it is the person holding it. Man is far more dangerous!
