If you are planning a holiday you may wish to consider motorhomes for hire. It can be better than flying as you are taking your accommodations with you. However, there are some important things to know before you get behind the wheel of a motor home or campervan. Here are some important tips to make your trip easier.
You may need to take a test for a C1 driving license classification. Younger drivers who have passed their driving exam after 1997 do not automatically qualify for C1 classification. You need a C1 license if the vehicle you drive weighs more 3.5 tonnes but not over 7.5 tonnes. If the vehicle is over 7.5 tonnes a heavy goods vehicle license or HGV is required.
Take a little time to learn about your motorhome before you get behind the wheel. It will not be like your car as there is limited visibility going in reverse and heavier vehicles do not stop quickly like smaller ones. You also need to be aware of clearances when passing under low clearance areas. New and inexperienced drivers may benefit from a training class at a local auto club.
Make sure that you pack at least one torch when travelling. Even though the motor home has sufficient lighting, you may need emergency light if something goes wrong. Also, you may not have a lot of light at the campsite and a torch or emergency light can come in handy. You may consider emergency lighting that does not require batteries and you simply crank it up.
If you want to save on fuel, do not fill the fresh water tank full. In fact, it may be best to fill it about half full. This will weigh much less and help with fuel economy, as motor homes can use a lot of fuel.
Try to pack efficiently. In other words, do not bring too many things with you. This is especially true with toys and things for children. If you travel with a full motor home, it can make it uncomfortable for everyone. Also, consider soft suitcases as they are easier to store out of the way. The fewer things you can bring, the easier it will be, and it will help save on fuel.
If you plan to be gone for several weeks on holiday, your stove may use more gas than you think. Before leaving, you might wish to get an extra gas bottle. Once you are out camping there may be few places to find gas for cooking. Also, if you use campsite cooking facilities, it will save on your gas.
Hiring a motor home can be an enjoyable experience. However, it is important to remember that they are much different than a car. Motorhomes for hire steer and stop quite differently than cars. Be sure that you have the proper driving license and to save fuel, fill the water tank halfway. Try not to pack too many things for the trip, and if it is a long holiday, an extra gas bottle may come in handy.
